Growing up I was a pretty good player, but I was the kid who made it to the final cuts for 'AAA" every year only to get called into the coaches room and be told I made the decision tough, but I was the “last cut” from the team…


This crushed me every year.


I remember always feeling disappointed as a kid, but I didn’t let the disappointment of not making the ‘AAA’ team stop my hockey dreams...


I overcame being cut from multiple ‘AAA’ teams growing up and made my way to Junior Hockey…


My goals were accomplished - playing junior hockey with some of my best buddies and forming new friendships and great bonds along the way…


One specific year of Junior Hockey changed everything for me…


We had a pretty awesome team that year, winning 16 or 17 games in a row at one point - smashing records…


I was living the dream...

And then it happened...

It was a normal Friday night home game…


Dressed up in my shirt and tie, I rode shotgun with a few buddies to the rink like every other game night…


A few butterflies in the stomach on the wintery drive up as we talked about how we were the hottest team in the league and how we had a legit shot at going all the way this year…


We got to the rink, and like usual we ran through a little pre-game warm up as a team…


The rink was pretty quiet, but in about 30-40 minutes it would be buzzing with our local hometown fans, like it was every Friday night...


As I entered the dressing room after warming up one of the assistant coaches yelled out to me...


“Kevin, we need to talk to you in the coaches room”...


My whole body tightened up, and it felt like I couldn’t breathe…


“Relax” I tried to tell myself, but I knew something was up…


I hadn’t been called into the coaches room all year, and nothing good happens in there...


I remember slowly walking in there, and at this point I was sweating…


All 4 coaches were jammed into the closet sized room...


3 of the 4 coaches had their heads down and didn’t want to make eye contact with me - again another sign that this wasn’t good news…


And then the words I will never forget...


“We have to let you go”


My stomach sank, my body tightened up, and I pretty much blacked out...


My vision went blurry, a thousand things were running through my head at once…


It felt like I was in a dream...


Our head coach was giving me an explanation about the GM making a mistake on the imports, but at this point, I didn’t care…


I felt like I was going to throw up and I just wanted out of that room that felt even smaller at this point….


My eyes were teared up so I avoided my teammates and went straight out the back door to the parking lot…


That was the low of my hockey career.


I always thought they made a mistake...


But mistake or not, I came to realize it was MY fault…


Maybe I should have still been on that team, but I didn’t make it a no-brainer, easy decision…


I was never that stud, stand-out player that everyone noticed on the ice…


I wasn’t the game changer type of player that coaches would love to have on their team…


And that was MY fault.


You see, I was a hard worker and I worked hard both on the ice and in the gym…

But I made two huge mistakes that I still regret to this day...

The first mistake came in the off-season...


I was going to the gym to try and become a better hockey...


But I didn’t train like a hockey player…


Back then the hockey training information we had wasn’t as easy to access as it is nowadays…


But it was out there... And if I was smart enough I would have been training like a hockey player…


Instead, I found myself wasting time in the gym with workouts that didn’t really translate onto the ice…


I felt like I was putting in the work to become a better player, but in reality I wasn’t doing much that would help my game...


And my second big mistake, that I still regret, came during the hockey season...


After making that junior hockey team I got complacent...


I showed up and worked hard on the ice, but I pretty much stopped training altogether.


"These games and tough practices are good enough to stay in shape" I told myself...


And I spent my free time doing what most junior aged hockey players do: hang out, video games, parties, etc.


Did you notice I emphasized most?


You see, the guys who actually make it somewhere in hockey aren't like "most" players...


Sure they might do some of that stuff here and there, but the best hockey players are 100% focused on becoming a better player...
